Baby finger at camera.
I forget, sometimes, that not everyone who reads my LJ/DW is on FB or G+. I've been posting there more often lately, when I've been posting at all. Been a busy month, you know.

Anyway, I thought that anyone who hasn't already seen them might enjoy this little You Tube Q series. See, my two-year-old is a music junkie, and though he's not really talking much yet (he's a teeny bit delayed, having had some ear problems last year which are pretty much no longer an issue...well, you'll see.)

He has favorites (largely influenced by my partner's favorites and my own.) Jay's a huge Neko Case fan, so he's been playing her for Q quite a bit.

It's gotten to the point where we can just sing a few lines either from this song or "This Tornado Loves You," and he's off.

He's got genre diversity, though:

And I've been showing him Mike Tompkins' stuff for a while. He won't tolerate just any YT music videos anymore. It's pretty much MT or nothing. I went ahead and bought the DVD of all his YT videos so that I can actually use the computer again. :)

I'm in the middle of uploading him singing along to "Firework" atm. He's been doing more of the sounds lately, too. :D
BBC's Sherlock, with the battle-of-wits table superimposed over his coat &hearts
I finally caught up with the rest of series 2 today (had to! I'm lecturing on rewriting, refracturing, and fic in the translation studies class on Monday, and I'm opening with Holmes canon vs. new adaptations, and then launching into fanwork from there), and this is my new favorite thing in life:

You're welcome. :D

(ETA: No spoilers for the new series in there; it's an old vid.)
yellow heart in a striped bowl
We'll be packing the computer soon, so I thought I'd take a second to do a bit of updating.

Moving/closing day is tomorrow. Q got sick, just in time--sent home from daycare with a 101 fever. If he's fever-free in the morning, she'll let him come back (she knows we're swamped and taking a toddler to a closing is not ideal). If not...I'm not sure.

I didn't get the job. But I'm...actually pretty happy about it. 1. It was a four-course load that consisted of 3 courses that would have been not only new to me, but outside my regular skillset (teaching creative writing) and 2. It would have started yesterday. I'm already overwhelmed as it is, actually. I think my winter study students actually could see my brain falling out my ears this morning. They tolerated my many tangents pretty well, all things considered. (Case in point, the Old Irish word for sword, which can also mean the tusk of a boar --> heroes getting gored by boars being a thing --> e.g. Odysseus and Robert Baratheon --> Game of Thrones in general --> "GRRM Is Not Your Bitch" is a tangent I actually went on this morning.) And, in sum, I got an interview with the department I eventually want to be part of, and it went well. They were clearly skeptical about my ability/experience teaching creative writing (as am I, tbh), but they were impressed with what I can do, enough to call me in, anyway, but also in ways I could tell during the actual interview. So when a job pops up, hopefully soon, that includes more literature and analytical writing, I'll already be in their heads.

Winter Study is going really well, considering. We're at the point where I can give them bits of text to translate, which is what I've done for the rest of the week (as I'm giving them the next two days off on account of moving) and they're really doing well. They have fun asking me about how the Mothership and W-town has changed over the past 15 years (this morning I dropped the knowledge bomb on them that Tunnel City used to be the site of a gas station!) and they're a great bunch of kids. I'm having a blast. Also, my Old Irish is getting in great shape, which is good, as I'm auditing another OI class this semester. I couldn't resist Merugud Uilix Maicc Leirtis. :D

Actual moving day tomorrow: movers get here around 7:30 am. We have a walkthrough of the new house around 10 am, I think, and then the closing at 11:30. I think I'll be going to bed at, like, 9pm because I'm already so exhausted. But I may not be able to sleep. It's like Christmas Eve, but really it's House Eve!
Everything's going to be fine, Eleven says
That went reasonably well. As reasonably well as any job interview where I'm super-qualified for part of it and maaaaaaayyyyybe suitable for the other part could be, anyway.

I may have to pick some of y'all's brains on strategies for teaching poetry--writing it, not critiquing it. I've got the latter covered. Not so much the former. :)

I should know by tomorrow, or the weekend at the absolute latest. Allons-y!

SQUEE!

Who's got two thumbs and a job interview tomorrow?

Yeah, that would be me. :D

Fingers crossed, everyone.

Fighting Fate (4984 words) by faviconkouredios
Fandom: Alexander Trilogy - Mary Renault, The Iliad - Homer, Greek and Roman Mythology, Classical Greece and Rome History & Literature RPF
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Alexander the Great/Hephaistion, Achilles/Patroclus
Characters: Alexander the Great, Patroklos (Homer), Hephaistion, Achilles (Homer), Odysseus (Homer)
Summary:

Hephaistion retells to Alexander the story of Achilles and Patroklos in a desperate attempt to avoid their fate.

My recipient, [personal profile] corilannam, requested happy endings for both Achilles and Patroklos, and Alexander and Hephaistion. We matched on the Iliad, though I had offered Alexander and Hephaistion as Classical RPF instead of the Mary Renault version. At first I thought I'd write her two different stories, but then a structure to embed the one in the other occurred to me, and this is what resulted. Many thanks to [personal profile] kass and [personal profile] firynze for beta-reading. They both made it better than it could have been.

I'm pretty pleased with it as only the second fic I've set free into the internets. I think I could have done more with the historical context of where Alexander was at the point in time I think his fate could have changed, but maybe I'll go back and do more of that later.

Also, next year I may attempt to write something other than Greek myth. :D
Christmas at Hogwarts!
First, let me say that my Yuletide gift this year is exquisite: a follow-up story to Pamela Dean's Tam Lin in which Janet is balancing being a mom and a grad student with aplomb--exactly what I asked for!

In other news, Cassie got a fair amount of Doctor Who swag for Christmas this year.

Also a Ten action figure and Eleven's sonic, which projects promo shots from season 5. She's incredibly excited. ♥

Hope everyone has a gorgeous day!

...okay, that's mostly for the [DW] icon.

Soooooo, our buyers are not budging as we try to negotiate extra time after closing (on a Thursday) to move out. Sooooooo, we're going to need to hire movers and pray, pray, pray that the owners of the house we're buying let us into the basement early to start emptying this house of eight years' worth of piled up stuff.

I'm terrified that it's a much bigger job than Jay thinks it is. And on that note, I'd like to ask my lovely, gorgeous, brilliant local friends that if they happen to have any afternoon free between January 3 and 19 and would like to help me pack/keep me company....that's pretty much all I'm going to be doing those two weeks, and I'm gonna need all the help I can get.

I'm going to have to delay the diss proposal until after that, I think. This and running the Winter Study class is more than I can deal with this month as it is.

Eek.
BBC's Sherlock, with the battle-of-wits table superimposed over his coat &hearts
I've been reading a lot of slashy BBC Sherlock fic lately (that and lots of Klaine!OMG) and thought I'd throw together a recs post of the stuff I've especially liked in the past few days.

I haven't delved too deep into the AO3 yet, so I'm sure there's lots of goodness that's older. Sherlock's a really active fandom, and there are new stories every day.

First of all, if you haven't read The Theory of Narrative Causality yet, do. It's an amazing meta adventure where BBC!Holmes and Watson are in general Sherlock fandom, and end up writing/living the BBC version. And fall in love. It's priceless.

As far as Klaine recs go, if you're not already reading [livejournal.com profile] stoney123's epic firefighter AU Where There's Smoke, get thee hence. It's not a WIP, but she's been posting one chapter per day, and hasn't posted them all yet. There are 9 chapters up so far (today will be the 10th, soon), and the epilogue is due to hit on Christmas Eve.
Even if you don't watch Glee, it's an adorable story of two boys in love and worth reading.

Also, I'm going to just rec everything [livejournal.com profile] flaming_muse has written. She does amazing character studies and relationship studies, and makes everything better when the canon isn't enough. Beautiful, beautiful stuff.
Calvin and Hobbes, ready to go sledding.
Eep.

1. Finish writing Yuletide story.
Last year I was just happy to achieve 1000 words, and in plenty of time. This year I've gotten more ambitious, and I'm already at 3000+, and with much less time to go. I'm pleased with how it's shaping up, but I'm not going to be done as early this year...especially as I was already done this time last year. Argh.

2. Write dissertation proposal.
Maria wants it by the end of the year, or at least by the beginning of Spring semester. It probably won't take that long, as we've already charted out the chapters. I just have to find time to sit down and do it.

3. Write WSP syllabus.
Oh, right, I'm also teaching an Old Irish intensive starting January 3, two hours a day five days a week. Whose idea was that? No, no, I'm super excited. But I need to make time to write the syllabus and review my grammar, which is getting increasingly difficult as I also need to make time to...

4. Pack up house and move.
Our closing date is January 19. Which is a Thursday. While I'm teaching said course. We're hoping to be able to lease back the house for Friday and Saturday to make moving easier. We'll see.

5. Christmas!
We still haven't decorated, since we were waiting to see what would happen with further showings (next weekend's Open House was actually a clever ruse on the part of our real estate agent to get our prodigal buyers to come back to the table, which worked!) Also, I'm in the middle of addressing holiday cards. So I should be able to finish that today, at least. I think most of my shopping is done, but I should actually sit down and make some lists to be sure.

But first I have to run out to Jay's office and sign mortgage paperwork. Oh, and then Q has his annual doctor's visit, as he just had a birthday.

At least I get to relax and enjoy my weekly wine-dinner-and-TV date with [personal profile] kass tonight. Now that's we've finished the most recent season of Doctor Who, she's finally going to show me something I haven't seen yet and she has, for a change. Slings and Arrows. Looing forward to it! :D
kaylee squeeage
It's official. We accepted an offer on our house today. The contract on the house we're buying was contingent only upon our selling our house. So. Assuming everyone stays committed, we'll be moving mid-January.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Kurt makes a field goal and parade waves
Both 3X07 & 3X08 )

Outside of the cut, I just wanted to link to the AV Club's review of 3X08, 'cause it's basically fic. And it's brilliant:

"Deep down, he felt as if he finally saw the deep mysteries. He felt on some level insulted that he would have to stand and clap. He felt as if it was… not a betrayal of who he was, exactly, but something cheap and unearned, something that arrived just to make sure this story was done and another could begin. He longed for a world where it seemed as if people existed even when they weren’t in contact with one of these kids. He longed for an end to the terrifying reign of Will Schuester. He longed for more weeks with no Sue Sylvester, because even though this week had been lackluster, her absence certainly hadn’t hurt.

Most of all, he longed to sit and clap politely, to not be a slave to the machine of the plot machinations. Most of all, he longed for something beyond what he’d been given to do, even though he knew this would probably be it. Most of all, he longed that when he opened the auditorium doors and walked out into the autumn sun, he wouldn’t simply cease to exist."

Even if you don't watch Glee, that review's worth reading. :)

...at least, mine is.

And once again, I'm reminded how wise it is to only offer the stuff I already know really, really well...at least at this point in my development as a fannish writer, 'cause once again, I'm in a happy place with my assignment.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I've already started writing, even.

This is going to be a good Yuletide, it is. :D

YULETIDE!

Calvin and Hobbes, ready to go sledding.
Dear Yulegoat:
Thank you SO MUCH for writing me a story! I am sure whatever strikes your fancy will be absolutely brilliant, but if you're looking for ideas, there are ideas and general blather beneath the cut.

In general, things that bug me about fic are things that bug me as a writing instructor: bad grammar and shallow treatment of content. Misogyny, racism, and other -isms are things I can tolerate only if they're being clearly subverted by the narrative. Child harm or death are things I just can't do. Other than that, I'm pretty open to reading whatever you choose to write.

There's really no escaping cat hair on a clean pillowcase. Especially when you've been trying to keep your house at its cleanest.

(11 people at our open house. Waiting to hear if anyone wants a second look. We didn't make an offer until we had seen the new house twice, so we're expecting the same pattern...)
Amelia's all dressed up and ready to meet the Doctor
As you may know, Cassie and I have been rewatching NuWho from the beginning.

Spoilers for seasons 1-4, just in case. )

This can safely be said outside of a cut, I think. When Cassie realized that meant Daleks, she sighed, rolled her eyes and said, "Ugh. Daleks suck."

HA. Yes. Yes, they do, honey.

So, yeah. That happened. :D

2.5 hours of friendly grilling, notes, and advice. And then my advisor and I immediately sat down (actually I was still standing, wiggling out some nervous energy) and wrote up an outline for my dissertation.

She's allowing me to take a break and sell my house, though. So now I'm packing stuff up for storage, and generally cleaning. My mom's in town for a bit to help with kid-wrangling.

Back to it!

So, hey, do you remember that post that deconstructed Twilight from the perspective of a former Mormon? No? Well, go read that first. I'll wait.

Several months ago, Jay and I watched Latter Days on Netflix streaming. It was sweet, if flawed, and generally I was just happy to see a film that explored the issue of gay Mormons. You know, besides documentaries (also available on Netflix streaming, btw).

So when stoney posted an original fic she had written about two Mormon missionaries who fall in love, I gobbled it up. And it's so sweet (and yes, there's lots of sex too.) What strikes me as the most interesting thing, though, is the way that she writes them as not turning their backs on their faith as much as turning their backs on the institution. It's a nuance that I find relatively rare in narratives about losing one's religion, so that was very refreshing.

Anyway, if it's the kind of thing that interests you, (and you haven't read it already) do go check it out?

We went up and down our own street, and then over to [livejournal.com profile] kcobweb's place. There we met up with [livejournal.com profile] squirrelhaven and [livejournal.com profile] outsidetheparty and young S, and the almost-sevens, the three and the almost-two trick-or-treated around the neighborhood. We never made it out of that neighborhood, which was just fine with pretty much all of us. A good time was had by all. Happy Hallowe'en!
